What Are DDR Medals Worth?

DDR (East German) medals are a broad and uneven category — the price depends heavily on exactly which decoration it is.

Updated:

As a rough guide, the Vaterländischer Verdienstorden (Patriotic Order of Merit), the most commonly traded DDR decoration, is worth 35 to 70 euros in bronze and around 80 euros in silver; for the gold grade without documented provenance there is no reliable dealer price. The Banner der Arbeit (Banner of Labour) ranges between 15 and 75 euros depending on class and fittings. Compared with decorations from the period up to 1945, DDR medals mostly sit in the lower to middle price segment — exceptions are rare, named and documented individual pieces, which can reach several hundred or even over a thousand euros.

Guide Prices by Version and Condition

All figures are guide prices based on real sale and asking prices from German specialist dealers and auction houses (as of August 2026). With DDR medals, the case, certificate and exact version account for much of the price range — send us photos and we'll give you a concrete figure.

Constant across all DDR medals: the original award case and the accompanying award certificate — sometimes with a recipient's ID number — significantly increase the value compared with the loose piece. We always assess an ensemble of medal, case and certificate together.

Original or Fake?

DDR medals are faked less widely than, say, the Eisernes Kreuz, but confusion between versions and re-enactment reproductions does occur. Five points we check:

  1. The diameter. The star of the Vaterländischer Verdienstorden measures exactly 53 mm. A noticeable deviation either way is a warning sign. Source: deutsche-digitale-bibliothek.de, retrieved 2026-08-28
  2. Material and hallmark match the version, not the assumption. Only the early "1st version" (1954–1972) in silver or gold carries a genuine fineness hallmark. Most pieces on the market today are the "2nd version" made of base metal, merely bronzed, silvered or gilded — with no fineness hallmark at all, because no precious metal was used. That is the normal case, not a sign of a fake. Source: de.wikipedia.org, retrieved 2026-08-28
  3. The connection between star and ribbon dates the piece. Fixed, arched connection: 1954–1972. Removable hook: 1972–1984. Horizontal pin with catch: 1984–1990. A piece that mixes features from two periods is suspicious. Source: de.wikipedia.org, retrieved 2026-08-28
  4. Case and certificate in the matching period style. The original case (leather or fabric in red or white, the correct DDR state emblem) together with the award certificate made out to the named recipient, sometimes numbered, is the first thing we — and auction houses — check. Source: zeige.com + andreas-thies.de, retrieved 2026-08-28
  5. Weight, enamel and patina. Modern re-enactment reproductions are usually lighter and show flat, unnaturally even enamelling or gilding, without the light wear that comes with 40 to 70 years of age.

If in doubt, we check the piece from your photos — that costs nothing and commits you to nothing.

Brief Historical Background

The Vaterländischer Verdienstorden was instituted on 21 April 1954, awarded in four grades (bronze, silver, gold and an honour clasp to gold) and in four different versions between 1954 and 1990 — the material and construction of the decoration changed several times over the 36 years it was awarded.

The Banner der Arbeit was instituted on 4 August 1954, initially as a single-grade decoration, and was expanded on 28 June 1978 into three classes (1st to 3rd). It honoured both individuals and entire collectives, enterprises and state institutions for "outstanding and sustained" achievements in the sense of the DDR.

Both decorations came with a financial premium in DDR marks — this historical payment has nothing to do with today's collector value. For valuation today: unlike the Mutterkreuz or the Eisernes Kreuz, DDR medals are not mass-produced items from twelve years of the Nazi period, but decorations from 41 years of the SED state with very different production numbers — from widely awarded merit medals to rare, named and documented individual awards to officials.

Sell Without Risk

We are a Spanish collectors' house buying throughout Germany. We buy for our own collection — with no dealer mark-up. In concrete terms, this means: we don't have to factor in a resale margin, and we can pay you a collector's price.

Here's how it works:

  1. Send photos via WhatsApp to +34 665 164 779 — front, back, ribbon, plus case or certificate if you have one. Two minutes, no obligation.
  2. Free valuation within 24 hours. We'll tell you whether the piece is original and what we'll pay for it.
  3. Payment in cash, at the agreed price. For larger collections and Nachlässe we come and view them in person — anywhere in Germany.

You don't need to send anything in before the price is set, and you don't have to sell if you don't like the offer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who Buys Old DDR Medals?

Specialist collectors' houses and dealers in militaria and orders — private buyers via classified ads usually pay noticeably less, because they lack market knowledge. We buy DDR medals from all over Germany, pay immediately and without a middleman.

Are DDR Medals Worth Less Than Decorations Up to 1945?

In most cases, yes. Merit medals and the usual grades of the Vaterländischer Verdienstorden or the Banner der Arbeit mostly sit in the range of 15 to 80 euros — noticeably below comparable decorations from the Wehrmacht era. Exceptions are rare, named and documented individual pieces, which can significantly exceed that range.

What Is a Vaterländischer Verdienstorden in Gold Worth?

For the bronze and silver grades there are reliable dealer prices (35–70 € and around 80 € respectively). For the gold grade in its standard version there is no reliable market price — the known references are auction estimates for individual pieces with a documented award to senior officials, and they cannot be applied to an ordinary example. Send us photos and we'll assess your specific piece.

Does the Award Certificate Increase the Value?

Considerably. A certificate made out to the recipient's name — for some decorations accompanied by a numbered recipient's ID — turns an anonymous piece into a documented individual item, and at auction houses it is regularly the main reason for higher hammer prices. Don't separate the medal, case and certificate before selling.

Is It Legal to Sell DDR Medals?

Yes, without restriction. DDR medals do not fall under § 86a StGB, since they do not display symbolism of unconstitutional organisations within the meaning of that provision. Trading in historical DDR decorations is freely permitted in Germany.

How Quickly Do I Get My Money?

Immediately after agreement: in cash, in hand, at a personal handover, or by bank transfer immediately after inspection if sent by post.
