Selling in Munich: auction or direct sale?

The Munich area has a distinctive feature in the militaria field: Hermann Historica in Grasbrunn near Munich is an internationally known auction house, whose auctions of orders and militaria regularly comprise over a thousand lots. For museum-quality individual pieces, an auction can be the right route. It does, however, come at a price: commissions, submission deadlines, and months of waiting before payment.

Selling directly to us works differently. We buy for our own collection — with no dealer's mark-up — give you a concrete figure within a day, and pay immediately. No minimum value, no fees, no waiting for the next auction date. For the great majority of estates and collections, this is the more practical route.

What you can bring to us

We are looking for originals up to 1945: orders and decorations, documents and award certificates, uniforms, helmets, daggers and sabres, equipment, photo albums, as well as military motorcycles and vehicles. In Bavarian families in particular, pieces from both world wars have often survived — from a single Eisernes Kreuz (Iron Cross) in the attic to the complete collection of a deceased collector.

Munich also brings a layer of its own: Bavaria had its own army, with its own ministry of war and its own decorations, until 1919. The Militär-Verdienstorden (the Bavarian Military Merit Order), merit crosses, and the long-service decorations of the Royal Bavarian regiments therefore turn up regularly in Nachlass (estate) collections in Upper Bavaria, alongside Prussian and imperial German pieces. Anyone reviewing a Nachlass from the Munich area should on no account sort out these older decorations — they are often mistaken for mere family jewellery.

You cannot sell us firearms or reproductions. Since many replicas are in circulation on the market, we check every piece for originality and tell you the result plainly.

Your route to a sale

  1. Take photographs — front and back, and for uniforms also the labels and inside.
  2. Send via WhatsApp to +34 665 164 779 — the valuation follows within 24 hours, free of charge.
  3. Complete the sale — payment in cash, at the agreed price; handed to you directly at the appointment in Munich. For items sent by post, we pay by bank transfer immediately after inspection.

So there is no misunderstanding: we have no shop in Munich. We are a Spanish collectors' house based in Madrid and buy throughout Germany — we make the journey to your collection, not the other way round. We combine appointments in Augsburg, Ingolstadt, Rosenheim, or the Bavarian Oberland into the same trip. We treat pieces bearing period symbols with due discretion: trading in originals is legal, while the public display of certain symbols is restricted under § 86a StGB, which is why photographs and documentation stay private with us.

Frequently asked questions

Auction house or direct sale — which is better for me?

For museum-quality individual pieces, an auction may achieve a higher final sum, but it costs commission and months of waiting. For most estates and collections, a direct sale is the more practical option — a valuation within 24 hours instead of waiting for the next auction date.

What if I have no idea what is in the Nachlass?

Then simply photograph everything that looks military — including papers, photographs and small items. Working out what it is is our job, not yours.

Do you really come to Munich?

Yes. For collections and larger Nachlass collections we arrange an appointment at your home in Munich or the surrounding area, assess everything on site, and pay directly.

Is the valuation really free?

Yes, with no conditions attached. Even if you decide not to sell afterwards, or prefer another offer, you incur no costs.

Send us photos via WhatsApp today on +34 665 164 779 — within 24 hours you will know what your pieces are worth to us, and the money follows immediately.

What is your piece worth?

You don't need to know what it is or have anything ready. One phone photo, exactly as the piece is, and we'll tell you what it is and what it is worth. Free and with no obligation.
